Social Action

The Social Action Committee is always looking for new ways we can help where there is an important need. We have decided to organize a monthly project to volunteer at the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. We hope to get a group together to spend a few hours working against hunger in our local communities.

The Mission of the Congregation Beth Israel Social Action Committee is to promote, enhance, and protect the well-being and safety of individuals, families, and our environment locally, as well as in cooperation with other groups nationally and internationally.

Some of our projects include:

School Supply Drive

The Social Action Committee is collecting school supplies for the teachers and students of Lafayette Elementary School in Hammond, Indiana. Wish list items include 2-pocket folders, composition books, glue sticks, one subject notebooks, crayons and pencils. Place your donations in the collection bin at CBI.

High Holiday Food Drive

What if your Yom Kippur was every day? You may drop donations off directly to the Jewish Federation or leave them in the CBI foyer and we will see that they are delivered to the Jewish Federation. Note: Gift Cards and/or Checks are always welcome. Checks made out to “The Jewish Federation” & in the memo portion write Food Pantry.

Used Batteries & Worn Sneakers

The CBI Social Action Committee continues to collect used batteries as well as your worn out sneakers (any brand, any size) for recycling. Please place your batteries and sneakers in the bins in the foyer.

Caps For Kids

The CBI Social Action Committee is collecting plastic caps and lids to help earn a bench for the students at Lafayette Elementary School in Hammond, Indiana. Please bring your collected drink bottle caps, hard/soft lids from food containers, and laundry soap caps to CBI and place them in the container on the table in foyer.

Food Drive

The SAC is conducting a food drive during the month of January in an effort to combat hunger in Northwest Indiana. The theme of this food drive is “Foods of the World”. Bring your donations of non-perishable food items to CBI and place them by the poster.
